Big Weekly Elk Forest Management Project

The Big Weekly Elk Forest Management Project was announced by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in June 2019 and proposes approximately 13 million board feet of logging in the Middle Fork / East Fork Coquille River vicinity. The BLM continues to target the dwindling stands of late-successional / old-growth forest and this project is no exception.

The BLM anticipates that their Environmental Assessment (EA) document will be published later in 2020 so there is ample time to get out and visit the units before their fate is sealed. To that end, I have created a series of maps of tree height for all units of the harvest plan. The map information is derived from Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data which utilizes a laser pulse to determine ground and surface heights. There are a total of 57 maps (one for each BLM unit map). Use the Map Index to find the map that covers your unit of interest.

Each map was created as a GeoPDF so it can be used with the Avenza Maps or Paper Maps (my personal favorite) iOS apps while in the field. I have also included a link to a Google Earth KML file of the unit boundaries, which can also be used in the field with the GAIA GPS app.

I was able to visit one of the units during my Spring 20120 trip and here is a collection of cell phone photos from the unit.
