About the Umpqua LSOG Project

The Umpqua LSOG Project documents the remnant late-successional / old-growth forests (or LSOG) that are left within the greater Umpqua River basin area. The region’s unique setting affords it some of the most productive forests in the world, an attribute that the timber industry has taken advantage of for nearly a century. The forests featured here on this website all share a common trait- at one point or another they were included in a proposed timber sale on public lands (either BLM or Forest Service). Some sites were ultimately logged but others received a second chance.

This website serves two purposes:

  1. Provide a testament to the beauty of LSOG forest & bring more awareness / appreciation for them; and
  2. Provide access to the same data resources available to federal land managers in the Pacific Northwest during the course of their work managing our lands.
